Hollow
Acrylic on plywood
22 3/5 × 15 7/10 in
57.5 × 40 cm
Varnished; unframed
Hollow is a part of the "Isolation blues" series created by Ola Intu on upcycled plywood. Inspired by the global pandemic and a national lockdown, the artist explores the theme of isolation, and how it appears in the natural world.
Various species use tree hollows as a shelter, pantry or a place to breed. Hollow becomes a place to hide from the predators, but also the one that can serve as a comfort hideout for winter. The painting explores the concept of hollow in a literal and metaphorical sense at the same time, becoming an allegory for disconnection and depressive states, that many of us experienced during the pandemic. Hollow shows us the link between humans and nature, where a need to hide in order to survive is the same for all beings.
