Ophelia 2020
Painting. Acrylic & ink on wood
48 × 39 2/5 in
122 × 100 cm
In this piece artist challenges a view of the classical Shakespeare's character. Ophelia was presented in Hamlet as a personality ruled and controlled by male figures (father, brother, lover and king), which finally led to her madness and tragic death by drowning. She was portrait by many artists through the centuries and become a tragic female icon. Intu sets the character in a cluttered scenery of year 2020, capturing the zeitgeist and it's social issues. Ophelia is drowning in water where plastic trash mixes with flowers. In the middle of a global pandemic, she is trying to cross the sea, like many refugees like her. Ruled and controlled by war, migration crisis, environmental pollution and disease, she remains not important to the public view, until the tragedy happens. The character is surrounded by flowers, mentioned in her final speech before death: pansy, rosemary, columbine, fennel, rue, daisy and violet. All of them have a hidden, symbolic meaning. The whole piece is painted with vivid colors, combining street art synthesis with magic realism into a unique style painting.
